Human agent is Meta's tag that extends a real team member's reply period on Instagram to 7 days after the 24-hour messaging window has closed. If a customer wrote on Friday evening and the team opens the chat on Monday morning, this tag is what lets the reply go out anyway.
Meta calls it the "human agent" tag in their documentation. There is no separate button for it in the panel: when the conditions are met, it is used on its own as you type.
Why it exists
Meta's 24-hour rule was built to stop automated systems from bothering people. But a real person answering a question one business day later is not bothersome; it is how a small business normally works. Meta draws that line with the human agent tag: the period grows, but .
only if a human really writes
The period is 168 hours from the person's last message, which is exactly 7 days. If the 24 hours have not run out yet, the tag is never used and the message goes out as an ordinary message.
For a business that closes at weekends, or one run by a single person, that is a decisive difference: answering a Friday evening question on Monday is impossible under the 24-hour rule and routine within the human agent period.
Where it works and where it does not
Where it works:
Instagram only. WhatsApp has no such tag; there, the only way past the window is an approved template.
Messages sent from the inbox only. Both text and files travel this route.
Where it does not:
Automations. A message sent by a flow cannot carry the tag; the engine stays on the 24-hour rule. This is not a gap but Meta's policy: an automation labelling itself as a human agent is a violation and puts the account's messaging permission at risk.
Retrying a failed automation message. A human may press the button, but a human did not write the text; the panel looks at the record's source and puts that message through the 24-hour rule.
Read receipts. The "Seen" mark that reaches the customer is not a message and cannot carry a tag, so it is not sent during the 7-day period. Opening an old conversation therefore leaves no trace for the customer.
WhatsApp. Your number has no equivalent of this tag; there, everything past 24 hours runs on templates.
⚠️ The extension has to be switched on for your portfolio, and it is off by default. The easiest way to tell is the badge in the contact panel: if a conversation past the 24 hours shows Human agent: until …, it is on.
How it looks in the panel
The Messaging window badge in the contact panel can say three different things:
Open until … — the ordinary 24-hour window is still running.
Human agent: until … — the 24 hours are up and the 7-day period is running. The message box is open and what you type goes out as a human agent message.
Human agent window closed — the 7 days are up too, and the message box closes.
When the seven days are up, the warning under the chat does not say "24 hours have passed"; it says that 7 days have passed since the person's last message. That distinction matters: the team had a whole week and it is now over.
Limits of the rule
The period counts from the person's last message; your own messages do not extend it. As with the 24-hour window, only the other side resets the clock.
If the person writes again during the period, everything resets: the window becomes an ordinary 24-hour window again and no tag is needed.
The tag is carried only when needed. While the 24 hours are open, the body sent to Meta is exactly the same as before.
Meta can audit the tag. An automated system labelling itself as human can cost you the messaging permission, which is why the panel never opens this route to automations.
A worked example
A yoga studio gets a "is there a class on Monday?" message on Saturday at 20:00. The studio is closed at weekends.
Sunday 21:00: the 24 hours are up and the ordinary window has closed. The badge reads Human agent: until ….
Monday 09:30: the instructor opens the chat and writes "Good morning, there is room in the 18:30 class". The message goes out as a human agent message and reaches the customer.
When the customer replies "great, save me a spot", the window reopens and everything returns to normal.
Had an automation tried to answer at the same hour, nothing would have gone out; the run log would show "skipped".
Things that get confused
Looking for human agent on WhatsApp. There is none. On WhatsApp, an approved template is the only route once the 24 hours are up.
Reading the 7 days as "always 7 days". The period runs from the person's last message and only kicks in after the 24 hours; if they never wrote, there is no window to extend.
Assuming automations get 7 days too. They do not; the flow engine stays on 24 hours.
Concluding the system is broken when the badge is missing. If the extension is not switched on for the portfolio, the badge simply says "Window closed". In that case the only thing to do is wait for the person to write again.
