An Instagram account is connected either through Instagram login or through a Facebook Page, and that choice is not binding forever: you can move the account to the other path whenever you want. Your conversations, contacts and automations stay in place. This guide explains how to switch and what the switch really affects.
⚠️ Don't switch before reading this. The two paths are two separate apps on Meta's side, and Meta grants approval per app. Move to a path that isn't approved and Meta will only deliver messages from people with a role on that app; your ordinary customers write to you, the message shows up on Instagram, but it never reaches the panel.

When to switch paths
Good reasons to switch:
You're on the Facebook path and tired of renewing the permission by hand. On the Instagram path the token renews itself.
You no longer have access to the Facebook Page. If Page admin rights moved to someone else, the Facebook path is no longer yours to run.
Messages don't arrive on one path and you know the other one is approved.
You want to connect several accounts in bulk and you're on the Instagram path today; the Facebook path does that in one sign-in.
Bad reasons: curiosity, "maybe it works better", or not finding where a setting lives. If the new path isn't approved, the price of the switch is days without messages.
Switching from the Connection page
This route is offered only while the connection is broken.
Pick the Instagram account from the account switcher.
Open Connection in account settings.
Confirm that the card's health badge says Needs reconnecting.
Scroll to the Reconnect section below.
Click the second button next to Reconnect: Connect with Instagram or Connect with Facebook. That button picks the other path.
Sign in on Meta's permission screen with the same Instagram account. If you are moving to the Facebook path, keep the account's Page selected.
Approve every permission.
Back in the panel it should say "Connection renewed". Check that the connection path badge on the card has changed.
💡 While the connection works, this section shows only Renew permissions and offers no path choice: its purpose is to refresh the existing connection. To change the path, use the method below.
Switching from the Connect account screen
You can change the path while the connection still works too; this time you start from the portfolio's connect screen.
Pick the portfolio the account lives in from the account switcher.
Click Connect account.
Click the button on the card of the path you want to move to.
Sign in on Meta's permission screen with the same Instagram account.
If you are moving to the Facebook path, tick your account on the selection screen on return and click Connect selected.
The account is not created as a new one; your existing account moves to the new path and no extra slot of your allowance is used.
This method also works on a live connection; because the account's identity is the same, the system updates the existing record instead of opening a new account.
What changes
The connection path badge. The card reads Via Facebook Page instead of Instagram login, or the other way around.
How the token behaves. Move to the Instagram path and the token renews itself from then on, with the "Renews automatically · next renewal" line appearing on the card. Move to the Facebook path and that line disappears, possibly replaced by a permission countdown.
Who can reach you. This is the most important change. If the new path has no Meta approval, only messages from people with a role on the app arrive.
The chat link. On the Facebook path the m.me address also works; on the Instagram path only ig.me is generated.
Ice breakers and the persistent menu. These are stored on Meta's side, on the path you are connected through. After switching, check the list on the Connection page; if it looks empty, retype the texts and press Save.
What stays the same
Conversations. Every chat in the inbox, the message history and the notes stay in place.
Contacts. Contact cards, fields and tags are untouched.
Automations. Flows, triggers and published states don't change.
The account's name and slug. Its address inside the panel and team access stay the same.
Your Instagram account. Followers, posts and the app on your phone are unaffected.
Your account allowance. A path change doesn't create an account, so it uses no slot.
A concrete example
You run a furniture shop. Your account is connected through a Facebook Page and every couple of months you get the "Permission time left: 3 days" warning. You've had enough and decide to move to the Instagram path.
You go to Connect account and press Connect with Instagram. You sign in to Instagram with the same account and approve the permissions. Back in the panel, the card now reads Instagram login, with "Renews automatically · next renewal: 12 November" under it. You ask a friend for a test DM and it arrives. Finally you check the ice breakers on the Connection page; the list looks empty, so you retype your four questions and save. Done — you won't get another permission warning.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
Switching without knowing whether the new path is approved. This is the costliest mistake. Always have someone send a test message from another account after switching; if nothing arrives, go back to the old path.
Signing in with a different Instagram account. The panel says "You signed in with a different account" and changes nothing; continue with the same one.
Not selecting the Page when moving to the Facebook path. No Page, no connection; on return you get "no Instagram business account was found".
Not checking the ice breakers. Give the list one look after switching.
Mistaking a path change for a data move. Conversations stay put anyway; moving an account to another portfolio is a separate job done from account settings.
Not warning the team before testing. There can be a gap of a few minutes during the switch; don't do it at your busiest hour.
If no messages arrive after the switch, see When a connection breaks or contact our Support team.
