The "Good hours based on history" buttons on the Time step are calculated from your account's own post metrics. How they are produced, why they sometimes never appear and how to use them.
The good-hours suggestion is a short list of hours drawn from your account's : the panel tells you which publishing hour earned your content more attention. If posts you published at 19:00 reached more people than those at 08:00, for example, 19:00 shows up in the suggestion.

Where you see the suggestion
On the Time step of the editing screen, under the date field, sits the heading Good hours based on history with a few hour buttons next to it: 09:00, 13:00, 19:00, for instance. The hint under the heading names the source: "The suggestion comes from this account's own post statistics."
At most three hours are shown. The suggestion is per account: two Instagram accounts in the same portfolio can show different hours, because each has its own audience.
How it is calculated
The panel combines two pieces of information: the publish hour of posts you sent from the panel, and the post metrics in the Insights archive. Hours are grouped in the account's time zone, each hour gets a score, and the three highest-scoring hours are shown as the suggestion.
Hours that score zero never enter the list. An hour with no metrics, or one that drew no attention, is not offered.
Three things make clear what the suggestion is and is not:
The suggestion only knows posts published from the panel. Posts you published from the Instagram app have no publish hour on record here, so they do not enter the calculation.
The suggestion is grouped in the account's time zone; your browser's clock plays no part.
The suggestion is a score ranking rather than an average: a few very well-performing posts at one hour can push that hour to the top.
Why it sometimes never appears
Sometimes the section is simply not on screen. That is not a fault; it happens in two situations.
Not enough posts. The suggestion needs at least five measured posts on the account. A "best hour" drawn from fewer than that is coincidence, and rather than showing a made-up number the panel does not draw the section at all.
Metrics have not arrived yet. Post metrics are pulled from Instagram in the background, and a new post's numbers do not exist immediately. If the Insights section looks empty, the suggestion is empty too; the reasons for that are in Insights look empty.
Seeing no suggestion in the first weeks is normal. Once five posts have accumulated, the section appears on its own.
How to use it
Reach the Time step on the editing screen.
Tap one of the suggested hours.
The choice switches to Schedule by itself and the nearest future occurrence of that hour is written into the field: if today's has passed, tomorrow's same hour is chosen.
To change the date, edit the field by hand; the suggestion only gives you a starting value.
The hour in the field is always read in the account's time zone. If your browser's time zone differs from the account's, take one look at the written hour before publishing.
💡 The suggestion is a starting point, not an instruction. If you know your audience — say you are a business that takes orders during the lunch break — you are free to pick the hour you trust.
Making the suggestion stronger
The more posts feed the suggestion, the better it gets. Three things speed that up:
Publishing your posts from the panel: the panel only knows the publish hour of posts it has a record of.
Trying different hours: if everything goes out at the same hour, there is no data to compare.
Keeping the Insights section working: when an account's connection breaks, the metric flow stops too.
Using the suggestion together with the calendar
The suggestion gives an hour for one post; balancing the whole week is the calendar's job. The practical way to combine them:
While preparing the week's content, pick one of the suggested hours for each post.
Once everything is scheduled, switch to the Calendar tab and look at Week view.
If two posts landed on the same hour, pull one to a neighbouring hour with the Move link under its card.
That way you use the hours your audience is busiest and your posts do not drown each other out. Moving on the calendar is covered in Calendar view.
A concrete example
A coffee shop has been publishing from the panel for two months and has twelve measured posts. The time step suggests 08:00, 13:00 and 20:00. The shop reads that as: the morning commute, the lunch break, and the evening at home. It schedules the new menu announcement for 13:00 and the weekend campaign for 20:00. It skips the 08:00 suggestion, because the shop is not open yet at that hour and nobody can answer the questions that come in. The suggestion is information; the decision is yours.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
I never see the suggestion section. The account has fewer than five measured posts, or the metrics have not arrived yet. Keep publishing for a while.
I tapped a suggested hour and the date became tomorrow. Today's occurrence of that hour has passed; the panel writes the nearest future one. You can change the date by hand.
The suggested hours do not make sense to me. The suggestion only looks at past metrics; it does not know your opening hours. Pick the hour you trust.
My two accounts show different hours. That is normal; the suggestion is per account and each has its own audience.
Used properly, the suggestion lets you line up a week of content at the hours your audience is actually online; the same content reaches more people for the same effort.
