You spotted a typo in the caption of a scheduled post, or realised you picked the wrong file. As long as the publish time has not arrived, all of it can be fixed: the button reopens the record in the editing screen. This guide covers how the editing screen behaves and which items cannot be edited.
Edit
⚠️ Note: Editing needs the editing permission; rescheduling or publishing after you save needs the publishing permission on top. The Edit button never appears for the agent and viewer roles.
Opening the editing screen
Open the Queue list via My profile → Create post.
Choose the tab the item is on: Waiting, Drafts or History.
Press the Edit button on the card.
The screen is titled Edit post; everything else is identical to the New post screen. The steps, fields, preview and buttons behave the same; the details are in Creating a new post.
When the screen opens, the fields arrive filled with the saved values: type, files, caption, location, tags, collaborators and the scheduled time, if any. Because a file is already selected, the screen starts on the Details step.
Which items can be edited
Draft — Freely editable. It is an unpublished, half-finished record anyway.
Scheduled — Editable. As long as the time has not arrived you can change any field.
Uploading — Editable, but you are racing the item's trip to Instagram. The panel re-reads the record's status before sending the publish request, so your save usually catches the job.
Error — Editable. This is in fact the most common reason to edit: you change the file or field that caused the error and try again.
Canceled — Editable. You can give it a new time and put it back in the queue.
Published — Not editable. The Edit button does not appear on the card, and the screen does not open even if you know the address.
Why a published post will not open
Instagram offers no way to change a published post's caption, location or file through the API. The panel cannot promise you that: even if it let you open the screen and press save, the change would never reach Instagram and the panel's record would differ from the live post.
To correct the text of a published post you have two routes:
Open the post in the Instagram app and edit the caption by hand (Instagram allows that inside its own app).
Delete the post on Instagram and publish it again from the panel.
💡 This is not a gap in {{brand.name}} but a limit on Meta's side, and it applies to every tool that uses Instagram's API.
The three ways to save
The buttons at the bottom of the editing screen are the same as on the New post screen and do the same job:
Save as draft — Saves the changes and makes the item a Draft. Careful: saving a scheduled item as a draft drops its schedule and it will not be published.
Schedule — Puts the item in the queue at the time you gave; the status becomes Scheduled.
Publish now — Sends the item to Instagram immediately.
Which button appears is decided by your choice on the Time step: with Publish now selected the first button reads "Publish now", with Schedule selected it reads "Schedule".
Saving clears the error record
When you edit and save a failed item, the panel does not just update the fields; it resets the item's history too:
The error note and error code are deleted.
The upload record opened on Instagram's side (the container) is released; a new one is opened on the next attempt.
The attempt counter is reset and the waiting period is removed.
The reason is simple: if you corrected the fields, the old error no longer applies and the item should run again from a clean start. That is why changing a file and saving does not also require pressing Try again.
How the scheduled time is shown
The time field shows the saved moment in the account's time zone. It is read in that same zone when you save, so the hour you see on screen is the hour the post will go out.
The same limits apply to a new time: at least 5 minutes ahead, at most 365 days ahead. If you only want to change the hour, dragging the card on the calendar is faster; see Calendar view.
A concrete example
A gym scheduled a Reel for tomorrow at 18:00. Checking in the evening, they notice the price in the caption is wrong:
They find the card in Queue → Waiting and press Edit.
The screen opens on the Details step; they correct the price in the caption.
On the Time step Schedule is selected and the hour still reads 18:00; they leave it alone.
They press Schedule. The list opens and the card sits at 18:00 with the Scheduled badge again.
A day earlier the same gym had received "Video too long: at most 60 seconds." for a video. They opened that item with Edit and switched the type to Reels, moving it to the 15-minute limit and publishing the same file.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
I cannot see the Edit button. The item is published, or your role does not carry the editing permission.
I edited and saved, but the post was not published. Most likely you pressed Save as draft; that button drops the schedule. Reopen the item and press Schedule.
I changed the file but the preview still shows the old image. Wait for the upload to finish; the upload card at the bottom right shows the progress.
I changed the type and my file no longer fits. Changing the type does not delete the file but raises a warning. Pick a suitable file and remove the old one with the cross on its card.
I switched to a story and it says fields a story cannot carry. The old caption and collaborators are still there. Press Clear caption and collaborators.
If the item still fails to publish after editing, see My post was not published or contact our Support team.
