Templates will not send — no payment method
If an approved WhatsApp template fails with a Meta error, check the payment method on your Meta business portfolio, your conversation tier and any limits on the number.
Your template shows as Approved, it appears in the inbox list, you press Send template — and nothing goes out. The panel shows a Meta error with a code. On WhatsApp, every conversation a business starts is billed by Meta; if the Meta business portfolio behind your WhatsApp Business account has no valid payment method, Meta refuses those sends. This guide helps you tell that error apart from the others and fix it in the right place.
⚠️ Note: This payment method is separate from your {{brand.name}} subscription. Paying for the panel does not cover WhatsApp conversation fees; those are charged directly by Meta to the card on your Meta business portfolio.
You may be seeing one of these situations:
The template is approved but the message is marked as failed.
Sending worked for a while and then stopped suddenly.
It reaches some people and not others.
The template step in an automation keeps failing.
A concrete example: a courier company sends its order-update template for months without trouble, then one morning every send starts failing. The template is still Approved, the connection is still Active, the quality rating is still High. The cause is an expired card on the Meta business portfolio: Meta bills business-initiated conversations and refuses sends when it cannot charge. A few minutes after the card is renewed, templates start going out again.
Nothing changed in the panel in that story, which is why looking for the fault there wastes time. When sending stops suddenly and across the board, the first place to look is Meta's billing screen.
Confirm this is really the error
The panel passes Meta's rejection through as it is, so read that text first.
In the inbox, look at the failed message. The red status line shows Meta error and a code in brackets.
If it was sent by an automation, open the run under Automations › the automation › Logs and read the reason on the failed line.
If it says the account's access permission is invalid, this is a connection problem, not a billing one; go to my account says it needs reconnecting.
If it carries any other Meta text and code, look at the billing side.
Add a payment method to your Meta business portfolio
The payment method is not stored in the panel; it is set up in Meta's own management tools.
In the panel, open Settings › Connection and note the name on the Connected Meta portfolio line. The payment method must be attached to that portfolio.
On a computer, sign in to Meta Business Manager (business.facebook.com) as the same Meta user.
Select the business portfolio you noted.
Go to Billing and payments and select your WhatsApp Business account.
Add a valid credit card and attach it to the WhatsApp account as the primary payment method.
Confirm the card is verified and the account's payment status is active.
Come back to the panel and send the template again.
💡 Tip: Adding a card is not always instant. Meta can take a few minutes to finish verification, and sends will keep returning the same error until it does.
Check tier and quality limits
If the payment method is fine, the next thing that stops sends is the limits Meta places on your number. Both appear on the same screen.
New conversations per day tells you how many new people you can start a conversation with in 24 hours (50, 250, 1,000, 10,000, 100,000 or unlimited). Once that is used up, template sends are refused. Replying to people who wrote to you does not count towards it.
Quality rating is the score Meta derives from user feedback over the last 24 hours. When it shows as Low, Meta may lower your tier or restrict the number.
Display name review: while it shows as Not approved or Expired, the number stays limited.
If your tier is low, spread bulk template sends across days; if quality is low, review what you send and how often.
Rule out blocks on the recipient's side
If sends reach some people and not others, the problem is with the recipient, not your account.
Confirm the number is actually registered on WhatsApp. Templates do not reach numbers that are not.
Check the number is written in international format, including the country code.
If the person has blocked your business, no template will arrive.
If the person previously asked to stop messages, Meta refuses the send.
If you sent many templates to the same person in a short time, Meta may apply frequency protection.
Other known issues and limits
Pricing depends on the category. Meta bills utility, marketing and authentication conversations differently, and the rate varies by country. Current prices are in Meta's own documentation.
Deleting a template stops sends. Meta removes every language of that name and automations using it can no longer send.
A billing problem does not turn the channel status to "Needs reconnecting". Sends can be refused while the connection shows as Active, so do not confuse the two.
The panel cannot see your Meta invoice. You can only follow your spend and payment status in Meta's own tools.
