Trying to remember "this customer asked about prices but never bought" only works up to a point. A tag writes that fact onto the person; after that you can list everyone carrying it with one tap and let your automations decide on it. This guide covers the four ways to add and remove tags, the spelling rules and the limits.
💡 What a tag is and what it is for is explained in its own article: Tag. This one is about how it is done in the panel.
In this article you will find:
The most direct way to tag a single person is their card.
customer, vip.The field is a text box, not a list of badges: tags sit on one line, separated by commas. The hint under the field reminds you of the format.
If you type the same tag twice, the second one is dropped; the order is kept and the first spelling stays.
⚠️ Note: Pressing Save announces the tag-added and tag-removed events. If you have a rule listening for those events, saving can start an automation and a message may go out to the customer.
To put the same tag on several people, use selection mode:
The full steps, the limits and the warnings: Bulk actions on contacts.
Most tags are not attached by hand but from inside a flow. The Action step in the flow editor offers two choices:
The same actions are available in the rules under Automations › Rules: "when a person writes for the first time, add the new_contact tag", for example.
For a flow to decide on a tag, the Condition step offers the Tag rule, with the operators has and does not have. Details: Condition.
A tag attached by an automation is in no way different from one attached by hand; both live in the same field.
There are two ways to list contacts by tag:
The dropdown in the filter only holds tags that are on at least one person. So thinking up a new tag and searching for it in the filter will not work; you have to attach it to somebody first.
If you use that combination often, save it as a Segment.
Tags go through these steps as they are saved:
When tags are compared, spelling differences are ignored: language-specific lowercasing and accents do not count. In practice that means:
In the filter list, however, tags appear with the spelling stored on the record. A tag written differently over the years can show up as two rows; both catch the same people, but the list looks cluttered. Use the renaming method below to clean it up.
Spaces are allowed in a tag: hot lead is one valid tag. Plain, short tags (hot_lead) are easier to live with in practice, because you retype them often.
There is no "tag manager" screen in the panel: tags are never predefined — they exist because they are on somebody. So there is no direct "rename" button either. Renaming takes two steps:
To remove a tag completely, do the first two steps and go straight to Remove tag. Once no one carries the tag, it drops out of the filter list by itself.
⚠️ Note: A bulk action updates at most 500 people per run. If more than 500 people carry the tag, repeat the action until the list empties; each run reports how many were updated.
A furniture shop runs its sales funnel on three tags:
asked_price tag to anyone who asks about prices.will_visit on the card and presses Save.customer and, in the same save, deletes asked_price and will_visit.Three tags make it possible to see, at any moment, how many people sit on each step of the funnel.
vip customer is a single tag.vip and vip_customer are different tags and your filters split in two.If a tag does not appear on the person you expected, check its spelling and the ceiling, then get in touch with our Support team.
