Choosing and changing your payment method
Where the payment method is chosen, which methods appear for you, the three renewal behaviours, what happens to your stored card and how to switch method later.

On this page
You are hunting through settings for a screen to save your card on. There is no screen listing saved cards in {{brand.name}}: you choose the payment method on every order, and the method you choose also decides how renewal will work. This guide shows where that choice is made and how to change it later.
Where the payment method is chosen
The method can be chosen in three places, all showing the same list:
- On the checkout screen, in the Payment method block under the order summary. That is the first choice.
- On the order page, while the order is still Awaiting payment. You pick one and press Pay now.
- At the payment step, if the payment could not be started or the form opened inside a frame. You pick one and press Pay with this method.
There is no permanent "default payment method" field in settings. The method used at your next renewal is the one you last paid with; if that method is no longer available, the first method that works in your country takes over.
Which methods appear
The methods you see have passed three filters:
- The methods the platform has enabled. Only configured methods appear.
- The currency you selected. Not every method accepts every currency.
- The country in your billing address. If a method has a country restriction, it is shown only to customers in those countries.
That is why the list changes when you change your country or currency. If no method remains, the screen says "No payment method is available right now. Please contact support." and no order is opened.
Method names are written plainly in the list; card methods name the provider alongside, so you know whose card form is about to open.
The three renewal behaviours
Under each method sits a line describing how renewal will work. There are three behaviours, and the difference between them matters.
Methods that store your card. The line reads "Your card is stored securely and the renewal amount is charged automatically each period; you can cancel at any time." With this kind of method a secure key for your card is kept and {{brand.name}} charges the amount each period. If your discount code has a duration it also applies to later periods, and remaining trial days are added to your first period.
Methods that set up a subscription at the provider. The line reads "The subscription is set up with the payment provider and the plan's full price is charged automatically each period; you can cancel at any time. With this method a discount code applies to the first payment only and remaining trial days are not added." The provider renews on its own schedule, and no manual renew button appears in the panel.
Methods that send a payment link. The line reads "We send you a payment link at each renewal." Each period you get an email with a link and you make the payment yourself.
⚠️ Note: If you pay a renewal order with a method that sets up a subscription at the provider, no subscription is created on that order; the line reads "We send you a payment link at each renewal." A provider subscription is only set up on new purchase and upgrade orders.
The question to ask when choosing is simple: do you want renewal to happen by itself, or to approve it each period? For the former, pick a method that stores your card or sets up a subscription at the provider.
Changing a pending order's method
- Open the order with the Awaiting payment status from the Orders tab.
- Choose the new method from the Payment method list under the summary rows.
- Press Pay now.
- The payment step opens with the new method.
The option list is only drawn if more than one method exists, or if a method other than the order's current one is available. On an expired order it is not drawn at all; there is nothing to do with that order, you create a new one.
Changing the method does not change the order's amount, period or currency. Only where the payment is taken from changes.
Your stored card
When you pay with a card-storing method, a secure key for your card is attached to your subscription. There is no screen in the panel to list, show or delete that card; {{brand.name}} does not hold your card number.
- To change the card, make your next payment (a renewal order or an early renewal) with the new card. On a successful payment, the new card replaces the old one.
- If you change provider, old card and customer records are not carried over, and the subscription at the old provider is closed; the same period is never charged from two places.
- To stop automatic charging, cancel the subscription. When the period ends the stored card key is deleted and no further charge is attempted.
If a card is stored but the charge keeps failing, that is not a method problem but a bank or card problem; you get an email with a payment link at every failed attempt.
If the payment cannot be started
When the payment step cannot open, the page title reads The payment could not be started and a red box states the reason. Common reasons: the order has expired, the provider returned an error, or the user account is scheduled for deletion.
Where possible, the method list appears under the box with the note "You can choose another payment method." and a Pay with this method button. A Back to order button closes the page.
If the payment form opened in a frame inside the page and does not display, use the Open the payment page in a new tab link. With redirecting methods, if you are not at the provider within a few seconds, tap the Pay now button.
Limits
- Card details are never held or entered in the panel. You always type the card number into the provider's own secure form.
- Payment cannot be started in a "view as user" session.
- A method has to work in the order's currency. To change currency you have to create the order again.
- With a subscription set up at the provider, a discount applies to the first payment only, and remaining trial days are not added.
- You can change a renewal order's method, but you cannot cancel the order.
- There is no bank transfer or offline payment option. Every method collects online.
If you keep getting errors during payment, check the stages one by one in The payment could not be taken, or contact our Support team with the order number.
